Russian diplomat: The Israel-Iran conflict was the result of ignoring Gaza.
Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, stressed that ignoring the Palestinian problem and failing to resolve the situation in the Gaza Strip led to a military conflict between Iran and Israel, according to the TASS news agency.
The Russian diplomat said last night, Monday, at a Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East: “We have repeatedly warned that the unresolved nature of one of the key and long-standing conflicts in the sensitive Middle East region has a significant impact on the course of events in the entire region and can lead to a full-scale conflict and the spread of confrontation to neighboring countries. Unfortunately, we and other countries that advocated the urgent strengthening of collective efforts to resolve problems in the Middle East did not find a hearing.”
Polyansky added: “The result of the constant ignoring of the Palestinian problem was the twelve-day war between Israel and Iran, which unfolded before our eyes, when two nuclear-armed states (Israel and the United States) attacked a non-nuclear member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) (Iran). Russia’s rational assessments of Tel Aviv and Washington’s aggressive actions, repeatedly expressed in the Security Council, remain relevant and noteworthy.”
The Russian diplomat also noted that there is still no sign of progress in implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which calls on Israel to immediately halt settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories. He expressed concern: “The situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and the process of resolving the situation in the Middle East as a whole remains explosive and causes concern for the international community.”
Israel launched its open aggression against Iran on the night of June 13, and less than a day later, the Islamic Republic launched a retaliatory strike. The United States entered the conflict nine days after the escalation of hostilities, and on the night of June 22, American forces attacked three nuclear facilities inside Iran. A day later, Tehran launched a missile attack on the largest US air base in the Middle East, Al-Udeid in Qatar. It was then that US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to a full ceasefire. The ceasefire took effect on June 24.
According to the latest Iranian forensic data, the number of martyrs of Israeli attacks on Iranian soil has reached 935, including 38 children and 102 women.
