Indian PM: The world needs a modern global system to progress.
The Indian Prime Minister addressed the Ethiopian Parliament on Wednesday and met with lawmakers; Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to address the Ethiopian Parliament.
In his address to the Ethiopian Parliament, Modi said: “We need a world where development is equitable, technology is accessible to all, sovereignty is respected, and peace is upheld; a world where decision-making reflects the reality of today and not the world of 1945; because if the world order remains in the past, the world cannot move forward.”
The Indian Prime Minister added: “It is an honour to be here with you today; Ethiopia is the land of lions and I feel at home because my home state of Gujarat in India is also the home of lions.”
He continued by paying tribute to the Ethiopian parliament and people, saying: “In this great building, the will of the people becomes the will of the government, and when the wheel of the government is in step with the people, the wheel of progress moves forward with hope and purpose.”
On Tuesday evening, December 15, after completing his trip to Jordan in West Asia, the Indian Prime Minister left for Ethiopia in East Africa and was officially welcomed at the Addis Ababa airport by Abiy Ahmed Ali, the Prime Minister of this large country in the Horn of Africa.
This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ethiopia in the past 15 years, and given Ethiopia’s recent membership in the BRICS group, Modi’s visit to this country has acquired greater importance in terms of international equations beyond the bilateral relations between New Delhi and Addis Ababa.
