Maduro calls Nobel Peace Prize winner an ‘evil sorcerer’

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called opposition leader María Corina Machado, who recently won the Nobel Peace Prize, an “evil witch” at a ceremony to mark the Day of Indigenous Resistance and Defense of Peace. He criticized the opposition member’s approach, calling her “any threat of invasion or war against Venezuela.”

Referring to Machado, Maduro declared, “90 percent of the entire population rejects the evil witch ‘La Sayona” (Maria Corina Machado); 90 percent of our people reject any threat of invasion or war against Venezuela. All the polls say this: 80 to 85 percent of our people are willing to fight for their homeland, for their land, Venezuela.”

The Venezuelan president defended the idea of fighting for peace, “but peace with freedom.” Criticizing the peace sought by “empires” based on “the ruins of Gaza” and “poverty and hunger,” he emphasized peace “with sovereignty, with independence, with dignity and with equality.”

In his speech, Maduro also announced the expansion of the indigenous component in the security forces and proposed the creation of “international militia brigades of indigenous peoples of South America to defend Venezuela if necessary,” according to the Efe news agency.
