US Senator: It’s Too Early to Talk About Lifting Sanctions on Syria.
According to Al Jazeera, the United States has imposed the toughest economic sanctions on Syria since 2011, along with its partners, which has weakened the country. Now, with the collapse of the Syrian central government, there are calls to lift these sanctions.
Accordingly, Reuters writes: Although there are calls in the US Congress to reduce the level of sanctions on Syria, most lawmakers are opposed to this issue.
The Tahrir al-Sham group, which has now taken power in Syria, is on the list of terrorist organizations by the US and many Western countries. In addition, the United Nations has also imposed sanctions against this group.
Jim Risch, a leading Republican senator on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said: “It is too early to talk about lifting sanctions on Syria. We need to pause and pay attention to what is happening. It is too early to say that the future Syrian government will act in the opposite direction to the Assad government.”
Senator Chris Murphy, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Middle East division, also said: “It is too early to lift sanctions on Syria. However, the United States must communicate with the new Syrian authorities. I do not think it is right for the United States to ignore the current situation in Syria.”
