PNN – A prominent Arab analyst, while describing the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as fragile, said: America and Israel are the ones who are causing the fire of war in the region.
The fragile ceasefire in Gaza has once again drawn global attention to the deep roots of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the power struggles in the region. While the temporary ceasefire has managed to briefly prevent further killing, questions about its durability, the process of rebuilding Gaza, and accountability for perpetrators of crimes remain at the center of regional debate.
In this context, Abdul Bari Atwan, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Rai al-Youm, in an interview with Mehr News Agency, described the current ceasefire as “very fragile” and, referring to the long history of violations of agreements by the Zionist regime, considered the prospects for a lasting peace to be very bleak.
He analytically addressed the political, economic, and geopolitical dimensions of Israel’s actions, from the widespread destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure to Tel Aviv’s ambition to realize the “Greater Israel” plan; issues that, he said, are preventing any real initiative for peace in the region.

The ceasefire in Gaza is very fragile
In response to a question about the sustainability of the ceasefire in Gaza, Atwan said: This ceasefire is very fragile, because the Zionist regime has never been trustworthy. There have been numerous agreements before regarding ceasefires and prisoner exchanges, but none have come to fruition. Look at Lebanon; after more than 8 months of ceasefire, Israel has violated it more than 5,000 times and attacks Lebanon almost every day, killing people. The same experience could be repeated in Gaza. Today, despite the ceasefire, a number of civilians have been martyred in the attacks of the Zionist regime. This regime has never kept its promises, not in Lebanon, not in Yemen, not in Gaza, not in the West Bank. That’s why I’m not optimistic.
Rebuilding Gaza: An Unreliable Promise
He said about the reconstruction process in Gaza: Rebuilding Gaza will be a very complex process, as almost the entire area has been razed to the ground. The Israeli regime has destroyed about 95 percent of Gaza’s homes and high-rise buildings, leaving more than two million people homeless. The main question is whether Israel will allow reconstruction? And if so, who will pay for it?
Atwan added: Israel is responsible for the destruction, but it is asking Arab countries to pay for the reconstruction, a project that could cost tens of billions of dollars. It is too early to talk about reconstruction, as we are still in the first phase of the ceasefire. Israel could violate the agreement again and even return to occupying Gaza.
Israel’s plan to dominate the region
In another part of the conversation, Atwan said about the impact of recognizing the Palestinian state by some countries: In the current situation, the most important issue is maintaining the ceasefire. It is no longer relevant to talk about a two-state solution or the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, because the United States, which itself supports the ceasefire and the so-called peace plan, does not recognize such a state. Trump has repeatedly stated that he is against the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. He has opposed all efforts to achieve a lasting solution.
Referring to Tel Aviv’s threats against Iran, Atwan said: The United States and the Zionist regime are seeking to destroy Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure. They are experts in war and destruction, not peace and construction. We must be vigilant and prepared to stand against the Israeli regime’s plan to dominate the region.
Tel Aviv and Washington’s hidden agenda in Gaza
Atwan said about the possibility of the leaders of the Zionist regime being tried on war crimes charges: The Tel Aviv leaders are seeking the complete destruction of the Palestinian people. As Trump said, their goal is to turn Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East” (a land of refugees). Gaza has rich oil and gas resources, and the Zionist regime and the Trump team intend to profit from these resources to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars. To achieve this goal, they want to gradually expel the residents of Gaza.
He added: Israel will implement this sinister plan step by step. First it will talk about a ceasefire, then it will violate it with excuses, and finally it will use these excuses to escape international isolation. Trump is also acting as a real estate broker in this regard, both for Israel’s and his own interests. He sees Gaza as an opportunity for trade and business, even if the price is human suffering.
The region on the brink of a new war
Atwan concluded: The region remains on the brink of a new war. The current US president is not a president of peace, but a president of war. He came to power to strengthen the Zionist regime and has paved the way for future wars by providing $26 billion in aid to Tel Aviv. As long as there is no strong regional force to counter the US and the Zionist regime, the Middle East will remain unstable, perhaps for decades or even centuries.
