PNN – According to the findings of a survey conducted before the start of the presidential candidate debates in the United States, more than half of the Americans respondents believe that the 2 people nominated by the political parties of this country, namely “Joe Biden” and “Donald Trump”, do not have the necessary qualities for this.
According to a report published by the Gallup Institute on June 27, 2024, 62% of American adults participating in the poll believe that Biden does not have the right qualities to be president. Also, 53 percent think that Trump does not have such personality traits.
Based on this, 87% of those who believe that Trump has the necessary personality and qualities to be the president are Republicans, 43% are independent and 10% are Democrats. On the other hand, 81% of the respondents who consider Biden qualified are Democrats, 35% are independent and 4% are Republicans.
As the graph below shows, in general, Americans do not consider any of the presidential candidates as favorable (below 50%). In the meantime, Biden’s popularity has dropped by 4% compared to December of last year, and has reached its lowest level (37%) in the last 17 years. When he was an unknown figure to many Americans. On the other hand, Trump’s popularity increased by 4% compared to December last year, and has improved slightly and reached 46%, which is the highest rating for him since April 2020.
The data in the chart below shows the agreement or disagreement of the views and positions of the presidential candidates with the issues that are important and key to the American people. In this way, 49% of the participants in the survey believe that Trump’s positions are not consistent with the issues that are valuable and important to them (against 49% who do not believe this and 2% who did not answer this question).

Also, 61% of the respondents believe that Biden’s approach to issues and issues that are important to them is not consistent (as opposed to 37% who do not think so and 2% who did not answer this question). In other words, by party supporter, about 9 out of 10 Republicans (93%) agree with Trump on key issues, and 81% of Democrats agree with Biden. Independents are more aligned with Trump (46%) than Biden (34%).
79% of Republicans are pleased with the fact that their respective party has nominated Trump as the US presidential candidate. This amount is almost twice as much as Democrats who expressed their satisfaction with Biden’s participation in the 2024 elections (42%).
The graph below shows that, in general, the level of satisfaction of supporters of both parties has decreased compared to the previous presidential elections held in 2020.
Another part of the findings of this research shows that Americans are concerned about the age of the presidential candidates. While the age difference between the two electoral rivals is only three years, 76% of the respondents expressed concern about the old age of Biden, who is 81, and 38% about the old age of Trump, who is 78 (a lot and somewhat).
Also, when Americans were asked to specify the political ideology (viewpoint) of the candidates, 56% said that Biden is “too liberal”; 30% believe that the views of the current president of their country are “almost balanced” and 9% consider him to be “too conservative”.
In contrast, 44% of Americans think Trump is “too conservative”; 38 percent say the former US president’s views are “roughly balanced,” and 10 percent believe he is “too liberal.”
The statistical population of this survey is people over 18 years old living in the 50 states of the United States and the District of Columbia, and the sample size is 1005 people who were selected by simple random sampling. This survey was conducted over the phone between June 3 and 23, 2024.
