Nationwide protests of American universities in support of Gaza; Columbia University deadlines to students

PNN – Protests in American universities to end Israel’s war in Gaza and send weapons to this regime continue despite police repression, and Columbia University, the center of the “Solidarity Movement with Gaza” in recent days, has asked students to end this round of rallies.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, at the same time as nationwide protests in American universities in support of the people of Gaza and the end of the Israeli war and the arrest of students, US President Joe Biden, ignoring the protests, passed the $95 billion aid law to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, which is more than 26 billion dollars for military and security support to Israel.

Columbia University in New York, USA, which is the center of student protest rallies these days due to the Biden government’s support for Israel, has set a 48-hour deadline to end the protests after the arrest of more than a hundred students.

Columbia University has twice extended the deadline for students to protest Israel’s war in Gaza. This university has asked the students to collect their tents in the university campus in the next 48 hours.

This university has announced the reason for the extension of the deadline is the progress in the negotiations with the students regarding the end of the sit-in and protest. These protests against Israel’s war in Gaza have spread throughout American universities.

“We have made significant progress with the student representatives who have been sitting on the West Lawn,” Columbia University said in a statement.

The university had earlier given students a deadline to collect their tents by midnight on Tuesday. This deadline was first extended until 8 am on Wednesday.

Nemat Shafiq, the president of Columbia University, had warned that if the negotiations fail and the university “must consider alternative options to clean up” the area.

But in its latest statement, the university once again extended this deadline by 48 hours, until early Friday, and announced that the student protesters have agreed to four of the university’s main demands.

However, several hours after the statement, the key student bodies behind the pro-Palestinian protests have not commented on the demands.

Demonstrations of Palestinian supporters have taken over American universities. But Colombia has been the center of this solidarity movement with Gaza. This is while a large number of students have been arrested and the protests are still ongoing.

Columbia University said in a statement that the student protesters had agreed to pitch a “significant number of tents.” Ensure that people not affiliated with Columbia University leave the campus. Only Columbia University students will continue to participate in the protest. Follow the safety instructions issued by the New York City Fire Department. Everyone will be allowed to enter the sit-in and “discriminatory or harassing language” will be prohibited.
