Netanyahu’s Great Failures: From October 7 to the 12-Day War with Iran

12-Day War

PNN – Netanyahu’s successive defeats in recent years, especially in the Gaza wars and the imposed 12-day war against Iran, have brought the end of his political life closer than ever.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, Al Jazeera Network, in a report, pointed out that the Israeli regime’s attack on Iran was carried out with the aim of strengthening the Israeli regime’s domestic front in favor of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and emphasized that a month after the attack, Netanyahu and the Likud party have still not been able to gain a parliamentary majority in the polls. Al Jazeera adds that Tel Aviv appears to have failed to increase the popularity of Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud party as a result of this war.

According to a survey conducted in Israeli media sources, before the Iran-Israel war, the Likud party could only win 21 to 23 parliamentary seats. This poll shows that the Likud party, along with other far-right parties, Shas and United Torah Judaism, will only be able to win 48 to 51 seats, which is 10 seats short of the quorum required to form a new cabinet.

Even though the Zionist regime’s attack on Iran was carried out to improve Netanyahu’s image domestically, the total number of seats held by the current ruling coalition in the occupied territories has still not increased. Meanwhile, although the Likud party has managed to improve its situation to some extent, the party of the Zionist extremist minister Itamar Ben-Governor has faced a decline in popularity, which has prevented the number of seats in the ruling coalition from increasing.

Defeat on October 7th and war with Iran

The defeat of the Israeli regime on October 7th had a profound impact on the position of Netanyahu and the Likud party in the occupied territories. This defeat, in both security and military dimensions, affected the intelligence services and the Israeli army, accusing them of failing to foresee such a comprehensive and widespread operation.

The second dimension of this failure was the inability to prevent the advance of Hamas resistance groups in the early hours, which led to Palestinian forces infiltrating settlements near the Gaza border, and more than 1,200 Israelis were killed in the operation.

In the imposed 12-day war, the Zionist regime was unable to achieve its desired goals, including destroying Iran’s nuclear program, eliminating the country’s missile capabilities, or changing its governance structure. The ceasefire also allowed Iran to strengthen its position once again, so as a result of these circumstances, Benjamin Netanyahu was unable to gain a better position in the polls.

The excessive increase of far-rightists in the cabinet

The third factor in Netanyahu’s defeat is the unprecedented expansion of the far-right in the cabinet in recent years. These movements had been isolated and completely distant from the political scene in the occupied territories since 1988. However, the multiple election crises between 2019 and 2022, which included five early elections, once again brought the far-right parties into the political scene of the regime.

Al Jazeera listed three main factors for this situation, writing that the repetition of the elections caused some voters of the major parties to get tired and not participate in the elections. On the other hand, the presence of the far-right in the opposition movement of the cabinet during the year and a half before the 2022 elections ultimately worked in their favor.

Another factor was the lack of coordination among the parties opposing Netanyahu. Labor failed to form a coalition with the left, and Meretz failed to win the seats it needed in parliament by a margin of 4,000 votes. In summary, it can be said that the growth of the far-right was not a result of their increasing popularity, but rather due to the weakness of their competitors and the political conditions of the time.
