What were the consequences of Trump’s withdrawal from international organizations and agreements?

PNN – The 60th presidential election of the United States of America ended and Donald Trump was elected as the president of the country. Although Trump’s victory is very pleasant for his supporters, this incident caused the background of his actions in the first term of the presidency to be reread in many countries of the world.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, one of the most important current concerns of America’s western allies is Donald Trump’s stances and actions against some organizations, institutions and international agreements during the first term of his presidency. According to some analysts, Trump’s presidency represented a deep departure from US leadership in areas such as trade and diplomacy.

In his inaugural address, Trump announced an “America First” approach to foreign policy and trade, focused on reducing the U.S. trade deficit and rebalancing burden-sharing in alliances with allies. In this report, the international organizations, institutions and agreements that Trump withdrew from in the first term of his presidency are discussed:

The most important organizations and agreements that Trump withdrew from in the first term of the US presidency include the following:

Trans-Pacific Partnership

One of Trump’s first actions in the first days of his presidency was to withdraw from the so-called “Trans-Pacific Partnership” agreement, which was established during the presidency of Barack Obama in 2014 with the participation of 12 countries in the Pacific region, focusing on East Asia. In this regard, on January 23, 2017, Trump ordered the Office of the United States Trade Representative to withdraw the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Review of the NAFTA agreement

In May 2017, Trump ordered a review of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which includes the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Trump considered the pact to be against American interests and wanted some reforms, including reducing the US trade deficit, removing what he considered unfair subsidies, restoring manufacturing jobs, and easing restrictions on intellectual property.

Withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement

On June 1, 2017, Trump announced in a speech that he was withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement because it would limit US sovereignty, hurt American workers and hurt the US economy. This agreement was signed in 2015 under the leadership of Barack Obama between 195 countries in Paris.

Withdrawal from the JCPOA

On May 8, 2018, Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). According to Trump, this agreement has not sufficiently limited and restrained Iran’s nuclear program and its regional presence. Without referring to any material violation of the JCPOA by Iran, he announces that the United States will return two sets of sanctions that were lifted by the implementation of the agreement. These sanctions came into effect in August and November and included the import of aircraft to the export of oil and petroleum products.

Withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council

Continuing the nationalist policies and anti-international organizations, on June 19, 2018, US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, announced that The United States is withdrawing from the United Nations Human Rights Council due to the council’s chronic bias against the Israeli regime, as well as widespread human rights violations in some member states, including China and Venezuela.

Announcing withdrawal from the World Health Organization

With the global spread of the Covid-19 disease and the severe shortage of sanitary supplies, including the corona vaccine, criticism of Trump’s management method to deal with the disease also increased. In this context, by adopting a nationalist policy, Trump took a position against international cooperation in the field of dealing with this disease. In this regard, on July 6, 2020, the Trump administration officially informed the United Nations that the United States will cut ties with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Before this date, Trump had accused the UN agency of misleading the world about the threat of Covid-19 under pressure from China. He also announced the redirection of US funding, which is the World Health Organization’s largest source of financial support.

Withdrawal from the “Open Skies” Treaty

Continuing his nationalist policies, Trump announced on November 22, 2020 that he would withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty. The withdrawal, which was met with domestic and international opposition, came six months after then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that Russia was not in practice adhering to the treaty.

Evaluation of consequences

Distrust in American security: Trump and the phenomenon of Trumpism have caused America’s allies, especially European countries, to lose their trust in America and no longer see this country as a reliable ally. For this reason, some of America’s European allies, including France, emphasizes that Europe should avoid excessive reliance on America in the military and security fields, and thought of a European defense mechanism to deal with this situation.

Distrust of America in international agreements: Trump’s withdrawal from some international agreements, especially the JCPOA agreement, has caused the formation of distrust among politicians and people of other countries towards America. With this action of Trump, there is a concern that any agreement made with this country will be canceled by the next administration.

America’s irresponsibility towards the planet and its ecosystem: Although the other signatories of the Paris Climate Agreement tried to stick to their commitments even after the withdrawal of the United States, and the Biden administration immediately joined the agreement, Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and his re-victory in the US presidential election made it possible that he It has strengthened to take America out of it again. This shows that the United States of America, which is considered one of the main countries that pollute the environment, has no coherent and reliable commitment to the global climate crisis and to the planet.
