Who are the new European Union political decision makers?

PNN – The leaders of the European Union by introducing Ursula von der Leyen, Antonio Costa and Kaya Callas as the heads of the three top institutions of this 27-member union, intend to entrust them with the task of deciding the future of the world’s largest trading bloc.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, The Associated Press news agency wrote that it is expected that the agreement on introducing these three European officials will be approved this week at the two-day summit of European leaders, which will begin in Brussels, despite the criticism of the extreme right in the European Parliament.

According to the agreement reached by the negotiators of the conservative, social democratic and liberal parties in the European Parliament, von der Leyen was proposed for the second term as the president of the European Commission. Also, Costa, the former socialist Prime Minister of Portugal, was nominated to replace Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, and Kalas, the Prime Minister of Estonia, who is known for his strict stance towards Russia, as the EU’s top diplomat and Josip Borrell’s successor in charge of the Union’s foreign policy.

While the appointment of Charles Michel’s successor is decided by the EU leaders, von der Leyen and Callas need the approval of the European legislators.

The European Parliament elections, which were held on June 6-9, witnessed the tendency of this parliament towards right-wing parties and dealt a fatal blow to the main ruling parties in France and Germany.

But the three main parties tried to keep the majority despite the rise of the far-right party led by Georgia Meloni, which is now the third largest party in the European Parliament.

According to EU treaties, the selection of candidates for key positions should reflect the results of the elections and share these seats between the winning candidates. At their previous meeting earlier this month, European leaders failed to agree on leaders for key positions in the union.

Criticizing the three-party agreement of the European Union, Meloni said that the demands of the citizens of the European Union who want a strong European Union were not taken into account in this agreement.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who was part of the negotiating team to propose officials for key posts, said the joint position of the EU’s three main streams was only “to facilitate the process” of appointments to key posts and was not intended to exclude Maloney.

Under the EU’s complex power-sharing process, the nominated leaders could nominate the next president of the European Commission, responsible for setting EU policy on everything from climate to the common budget.

The role of the President of the European Council is to mediate trade between EU member states, while at the same time, this top European diplomat is the Union’s representative on the world stage.
