Who is the new UN coordinator responsible for facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza?

PNN – After the Israeli regime did not renew the visa of Mrs. “Lynn Hastings” of Canadian origin and the coordinator of humanitarian assistance of the United Nations in Gaza and Palestinian affairs, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed Sigrid Kag instead of him, who will be responsible for facilitating, coordinating and monitoring the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and creating a mechanism to accelerate this aid.

According to Pakistan News Network, according to the announcement of the United Nations, Mrs. Sigrid Kaag, the Minister of Finance of the Netherlands, will start his activity as the senior coordinator of humanitarian affairs and reconstruction of Gaza on January 8.

Ms. Kag will also be responsible for facilitating, coordinating and monitoring the delivery of humanitarian shipments to Gaza. He will also establish a mechanism to expedite the delivery of aid to Gaza through neutral countries in Israel’s war against the people of Gaza.

Kag is a seasoned UN diplomat and previously chaired an international group of weapons experts charged with overseeing the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile.

Ms. Kag has held a wide range of senior positions at the United Nations. From 2015 to 2017, he was the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon and from 2013 to 2015, he was the Special Coordinator of the Joint Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the UN Mission in Syria. He served as Assistant Secretary-General at the United Nations Development Program from 2010 to 2013 and as Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Jordan from 2007 to 2010. Prior to that, Ms. Kag worked in several senior roles with UNICEF, the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

Ms. Kag holds an MA in Middle East Studies from the University of Exeter, an MA in International Relations from the University of Oxford, and a BA in Middle East Studies from the American University of Cairo. He speaks Dutch, German, French, English, Spanish and Arabic.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan welcomed the appointment of Mrs. Kag and called this appointment an important step and claimed that Washington continues to cooperate with the United Nations as an important partner in providing and distributing humanitarian aid in Gaza.

The National Security Adviser of the White House did not mention Washington’s financial, military, security and political support to Tel Aviv and the veto of all resolutions in the UN Security Council by Joe Biden’s government, which demanded an immediate ceasefire and a stop to Israel’s incessant bombings and claimed: The United States is the largest funder of humanitarian aid efforts to support Palestinian civilians caught in the middle of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Previously, the spokesperson of the United Nations announced that the Israeli authorities informed the United Nations that Tel Aviv will not extend the visa of Ms. Lynn Hastings, a Canadian of Canadian origin and the UN humanitarian aid coordinator for the Palestinians.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters that he had been informed by Israeli officials that Ms. Hastings’ visa would not be extended beyond the deadline later this month.

The UN spokesman added that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had “full confidence” in Ms Hastings.

Dujarric stated: “You have seen numerous public attacks against her (Ms. Hastings) on Twitter (the X social network) which is unacceptable. “Attacks against UN staff in different parts of the world put their lives at risk.”

The Foreign Ministry of the Israeli regime accused Mrs. Hastings, the UN humanitarian aid coordinator for the Palestinians, of not being “neutral” in the events of October, but the UN strongly denies this accusation.

Mrs. Hastings was the deputy head of the coordination of Middle East peace affairs and humanitarian actions in the occupied Palestinian territories for three years.

The resolution also calls on the parties to “create conditions for a lasting cessation of hostilities.” The first version called for an end to the war, while the second called for a “suspension” of the war to provide aid.

The resolution also calls on the parties to facilitate “the use of all available routes across the Gaza Strip” for the delivery of aid, and calls on the UN Secretary-General to appoint an authority to oversee the delivery of aid, and calls for that authority to establish an organization mechanism. This represents another difference from the original text. The initial draft requested the UN Secretary-General to establish a binding mechanism for rapid aid.

The adopted Security Council resolution also calls for the release of the “hostages” and the entry of sufficient fuel into Gaza to meet humanitarian needs.

From the point of view of international analysts, it can be said that in this public meeting of the Security Council, the United States once again vetoed any suspension or immediate ceasefire and a resolution was passed in the Security Council, which still allows the Israeli regime to continue its attacks without fear.
