Details inside : Lahore’s chicken prices climb to Rs 600 per kg

LAHORE – Chicken prices in Lahore, Punjab, have surged in recent days, creating concern among residents despite a broader decline in overall inflation. As of the weekend, the price of chicken across the province, including major cities like Rawalpindi, jumped to between Rs 584 and Rs 595 per kilogram, up from Rs 550 per kg just last week.

The official price set by the Lahore district government is currently Rs 584 per kilogram, but many retailers are reportedly selling chicken at even higher rates, with some charging up to Rs 600 per kilogram. This increase comes at a time when prices for other basic commodities have started to stabilize, leaving many citizens frustrated by the continued rise in poultry costs.

Wholesale prices
In addition to the retail prices, wholesale rates have also seen an uptick. Live broiler chickens are now selling at Rs 383 per kilogram in the wholesale market, with the retail price standing at Rs 411 per kilogram. Meanwhile, broiler meat is being sold at Rs 595 per kilogram in retail outlets, reflecting the current market trends in the poultry industry.

Egg prices have also remained high, with a standard farm packet of eggs now costing Rs 8,610, further contributing to the financial strain on households.

The rise in chicken prices is largely attributed to supply and demand factors, with poultry shop owners citing production costs and market fluctuations as key reasons for the increase. While chicken remains a relatively affordable source of protein, the recent price hike has drawn criticism, especially as consumers were expecting a relief in food costs in line with the broader economic trends.

The district government in Lahore continues to monitor the situation, with officials expected to review the pricing structure in the coming days. There is hope that the prices will begin to stabilize, offering some respite to the public. However, until then, the rising cost of chicken remains a point of contention for many citizens in Punjab.
