Former Pakistani ambassador to the US: Trump started a trade war

PNN – In the continuation of the new US administration’s tariff war, US President Donald Trump also targeted Pakistan with a 29% tariff, while Islamabad has always opposed Washington’s cold and economic war in the region, and Pakistani experts interpret Trump’s move as a new trade war.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, Pakistani media outlets report that experts in the country interpret the tariffs imposed by Trump on countries around the world as a spark for a new trade war.

The new US President Donald Trump has imposed a 29% tariff on goods imported from Pakistan. The Islamabad government has not yet given an official response to this.

Meanwhile, Ms. Maleeha Lodhi, former Pakistani ambassador to the United States and former permanent representative of that country to the United Nations, said in response to Trump’s tariff war that it would be the start of a new trade war in the world.

He informed the Pakistani government that the 29% tariff on Pakistan would lead to an increase in the price of the country’s export goods in the United States.

The veteran diplomat said that tariffs on Pakistani goods by the US are not a new issue, but Islamabad needs to improve its export situation.

Referring to the Cold War between Beijing and Washington, he added: Pakistan must choose the right path.

Pakistan has always defended its macro-economic and strategic cooperation with China and opposed any aggressive actions by the United States to promote a cold and economic war in the region.

On Wednesday, local time, April 2, 2025, with all members of his administration, along with several senators and senior American political figures, sitting in front of him, the US President began the ceremony to announce new tariffs on goods imported into the United States in the Rose Garden of the White House, after the country’s financial markets were closed.

Trump, stating that 25% tariffs on imported cars will be imposed starting tonight, defended his tariff war by claiming that “today is one of the most important days in American history because it marks the declaration of our economic independence,” and told all countries in the world that they must pay for access to the American market.
