PNN: The Lahore High Court has constituted a three-member full bench to hear cases concerning the enforcement of the Property Ownership Ordinance in Punjab, following multiple petitions challenging the law. The hearing is scheduled for February 23.
The move comes after more than 200 petitions were filed by citizens alleging that committees, operating under the supervision of Deputy Commissioners, have been reclaiming land using paramilitary forces a power that legally rests with the relevant tribunals. Petitioners also claim that these committees are exceeding their legal authority and misusing the ordinance.
During preliminary hearings, the LHC had temporarily suspended the implementation of the ordinance and sought a response from the Punjab government. The court recommended the formation of a full bench to examine the matter thoroughly.
The three-member bench will be led by Chief Justice Alia Neelum and will include Justice Javed Zafar and Justice Abhar Gul Khan.
Notices have been issued to the Punjab government and other relevant parties by the LHC registrar’s office, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed ahead of the hearing.
The full bench is expected to review the petitions, examine alleged irregularities, and determine the future course regarding the enforcement of the Property Ownership Ordinance in Punjab.
