Nadra Rolls Out Facial Recognition for Biometric Verification

PNN: The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has introduced a facial recognition biometric verification facility, enhancing identity services through digital platforms.

According to a Nadra spokesperson, the scope of biometric verification has been broadened following amendments to the National Identity Card laws. Under the new framework, citizens can now avail biometric verification using facial recognition via the Pak-ID mobile application.

From January 20, Nadra registration centres will also begin issuing biometric verification certificates based on facial recognition. The spokesperson said the certificate would be available on payment of a nominal fee and could be obtained whenever required.

In cases where fingerprint verification is not possible, applicants will be referred to the nearest Nadra registration centre. Upon successful facial recognition, the authority will issue the biometric verification certificate.

The certificate will carry the holder’s photograph, CNIC number, name, father’s name, a unique tracking ID and a QR code. Nadra has urged both public and private sector institutions to make necessary arrangements to adopt and recognise the new verification facility.

The spokesperson added that following the launch of the Digital ID, the facial recognition service will also be accessible through the Pak-ID mobile application.

Meanwhile, Nadra revealed that more than six million citizens obtained their identity documents through the Pak-ID app during 2025, reflecting a growing public reliance on digital government services.

In a statement, the authority thanked citizens for their confidence in the Pak-ID platform, noting that the application has significantly improved access to identity-related services and enhanced digital convenience nationwide.

Nadra said the rising use of the Pak-ID app highlights its role in streamlining registration processes and supporting Pakistan’s broader drive towards the digitalisation of public services.
