Pakistan on Sunday called out India for its human rights abuses in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), urging the international community to press New Delhi to uphold the fundamental rights of the Kashmiris.
In a statement commemorating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar underscored that Islamabad remains “deeply concerned” about the status of human rights in the occupied region.
“In South Asia, India is violating all norms and conventions of human rights in the IIOJK,” the premier’s statement read.
He added that India’s “illegal” actions of August 5, 2019, — the abrogation of its Article 370 — were aimed at inducing demographic change to disenfranchise the Kashmiris from their right to self-determination.
The premier underscored that the measures taken by New Delhi have “further aggravated the scale of oppression and suppression” of Kashmiri’s fundamental rights and freedoms.
“Pakistan reiterates its call to end egregious human rights abuses in IIOJK”, Kakar said while reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to ensure continued moral, political and diplomatic support to the Kashmiris.
The premier also urged the world powers to press Israel on ceasefire in Gaza amid the unfolding human tragedy in the besieged strip.
Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to upholding human rights, the prime minister highlighted Islamabad’s proactive approach to abide by international humanitarian laws and conventions, and highlighted that the country has taken notable steps towards the protection of human rights for its citizens.
Furthermore, he maintained that the establishment of various governmental bodies such as the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR), the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), the Family Protection and Rehabilitation Centre, Transgender Protection Centre and others are a testament to Pakistan’s commitment to protect and uphold human rights in the country.
Alvi laments int’l failure to uphold human rights
Meanwhile, President Dr Arif Alvi — referring to this year’s theme “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All” — called out the international community for its failure to protect Palestinians and Kashmiris from the human rights abuses by Israel and India, respectively.
Lamenting the brutalisation, and dehumanisation of Palestinians by Israeli forces, the president said: “The international community has failed to take action against Israel and stop it from committing a genocide of the Palestinian people.”
The president urged the international community to heed the human rights abuses in the occupied valley by Indian forces and hold New Delhi accountable for “unleashing a reign of terror against” Kashmiris.
