PNN: CM Sindh Murad Ali Shah has in principle approved a Rs100 billion master plan to transform Civil Hospital Karachi, marking a significant step towards upgrading healthcare infrastructure in the provincial capital.
Chairing a high-level meeting at the Chief Minister’s House, the chief minister also approved a Rs50 billion grant from the Sindh government for the project. Work on the Abdul Sattar Edhi Medical Tower is expected to begin immediately.
Officials said the ambitious project aims to expand the hospital’s capacity while preserving its historical legacy. Currently, Civil Hospital Karachi has 2,142 beds, and the expansion will add 500 more beds along with several new facilities.
These include a modern medical tower, surgical ward, outpatient department (OPD), burns ward and a jail ward. The redevelopment will also feature a modern mortuary, improved waste management systems, administrative blocks, and dedicated hostels for doctors and nurses.
Under the plan, outdated structures and underutilised spaces will be replaced with vertical towers to optimise space and enhance healthcare services.
To address traffic congestion around the hospital, the project proposes widening Yakoob Khan Road and Bezanji Road to ensure smoother ambulance access and patient movement.
Murad Ali Shah emphasised that the hospital’s historic character would be preserved. He said heritage buildings would be restored and protected alongside new construction.
The meeting also decided to form a board comprising professionals from the public and private sectors to oversee and expedite the project’s implementation.
