Geminids meteor shower to illuminate December nights

Geminids meteor shower to illuminate December nights

Bright and vibrant meteors will grace the night sky, reaching their peak on December 13th and 14th during the Geminids meteor shower.

Renowned for their vivid display, the Geminids are considered one of the most reliable and active meteor showers annually, with a history dating back to the mid-1800s.

Initially modest with 10 to 20 meteors per hour, the Geminids have grown in intensity over time, with observers potentially witnessing up to 120 meteors per hour under optimal conditions.

From County Antrim in Northern Ireland to County Cork in the Republic of Ireland, stargazers will have the opportunity to watch the annual event which is known for its consistency and brilliance.

The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky and no special equipment is needed to see them.

Enthusiasts, however, are advised to keep up to date with the latest weather forecast as unsettled conditions look likely to persist this week.

Characterised by their brightness, high speeds, and distinctive yellow colour, the meteors offer a captivating celestial show.

Nasa recommends optimal viewing during the night and predawn hours, starting around 9 or 10 pm, away from city lights.

To fully experience the event, lying flat on your back, facing south, and gazing upward to encompass as much of the sky as possible is recommended.

This mesmerising event promises to be a memorable celestial spectacle.
