Microsoft ‘s Windows 10 support phase-out may lead to disposal
Canalys Research has raised concerns over Microsoft’s decision to terminate support for the Windows 10 operating system, potentially resulting in the disposal of approximately 240 million personal computers (PCs) and contributing to landfill waste.
The electronic waste generated from these PCs is estimated to weigh around 480 million kilogrammes, equivalent to 320,000 cars.
While many PCs could continue functioning after the end of OS support, Canalys cautioned that the demand for devices lacking security updates might be low.
Microsoft has announced a plan to offer security updates for Windows 10 devices until October 2028 at an undisclosed annual cost.
However, Canalys suggests that if the pricing structure follows historical trends, transitioning to newer PCs might become more cost-effective, leading to a higher number of older PCs being discarded.
Microsoft’s goal to discontinue support for Windows 10 by October 2025 could result in a surge of electronic waste.
The report emphasises that the next generation of the operating system, Windows 11, expected to introduce advanced artificial intelligence technology, might stimulate the sluggish PC market.
Microsoft has not yet responded to inquiries about the environmental impact of disposing of Windows 11-incompatible devices.
The report notes that recycling components, such as hard drives from personal computers and data storage servers, can contribute to sustainable technologies like electric vehicles and wind turbines, addressing the growing global demand for electricity.
