3 major obstacles to a sustainable nuclear deal with the US.

3 major obstacles to a sustainable nuclear deal with the US.

As the third round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States, mediated by the Omani government, is being held in Muscat, many analysts are presenting different perspectives on the possibility of reaching a new agreement between Iran and the United States.

What is clear is that there is a positive atmosphere surrounding the talks. However, from a general perspective, it should be noted that three major obstacles to a lasting agreement between Iran and the United States seem essential to pay attention to.

American leaders see themselves and their country in a superpower position and think that they must achieve their maximum demands in nuclear interaction with Tehran.

First, the main nature of the US government’s view of the nuclear talks with Iran is not to solve the problem, but to lay the groundwork for hitting Iran. In more than two decades of nuclear diplomacy with Iran, various US governments have shown that they evaluate negotiations as a tool for hitting Iran, and because they cannot take action on the ground and using hard tools against Iran, they intend to weaken Iran through negotiations.

A concrete manifestation of this issue can be seen in the JCPOA agreement; an agreement in which, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Barack Obama and Trump administrations, Iran fulfilled all its commitments; but ultimately Donald Trump withdrew from it in 2018 and launched a flood of sanctions against Iran. Therefore, the fact that the Americans do not have good faith in negotiating with Iran is a serious obstacle to the sustainability of any nuclear agreement between Iran and the United States.

Second, the fact that American leaders see themselves and their country in a superpower position and think that they must achieve their maximum demands in nuclear interaction with Tehran. They even expect our country to step on its national interests and give in to Washington’s demands, or, to put it simply, pay ransom. This is precisely why, in the framework of the agreement, they are actually seeking Iran’s surrender and not the preservation of our country’s dignity and interests.

Their excuses regarding the JCPOA and various accusations against Iran have also been a kind of prelude by the West to trample on Iran’s national interests. Therefore, the excessive demands of the United States and its leaders are one of the main obstacles to the sustainability of the new nuclear agreement between Iran and the United States.

Third, American officials are not acting in a unified manner in the nuclear deal with Iran, and it would not be wrong to say that they are acting this way intentionally. A possible agreement that the Trump administration signs with Iran could easily be ignored by the next administration of this country or even the US Congress and reach a deadlock. The US government expects Iran not to take this into account, while this is an unreasonable expectation, because Iran is negotiating with the whole, which is the sovereignty of the United States, and the country’s internal issues have nothing to do with Tehran.

This is why it is said that obtaining credible guarantees from the United States is one of the most important concerns of our country’s diplomats, while the US government considers this area to be significant for evading its obligations towards Iran.
