In a new ABC News/Ipsos poll of 2,228 people conducted between January 4 and 8, about a third — 30 percent — of participants said they think judges should order Trump removed from ballots across the United States; Twenty-six percent said it should be left to election officials in each state. Meanwhile, 39 percent of Americans polled said they think the Supreme Court should order Trump to remain on the ballot in all states.
The US Supreme Court is going to decide on Trump’s disqualification in Colorado; Trump has also filed an appeal against the ruling of the state of Maine, which could eventually reach the United States Supreme Court.
According to the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, on which Trump’s impeachment decision was based, any person who has “committed rebellion or insurrection” against the United States government is disqualified from holding public office; But this amendment is vague and the way to implement this ban is not clear.
In both of these states, Trump lost to Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, and it is unlikely that he will need their votes to win the election.
But if his name is removed in these two states, this practice could spread to key states (states that may vote for one of the two parties at a time) and reduce his chances of winning in what is expected to be a closely contested election.
