Only 46 percent of American adults approve of President Donald Trump’s handling of immigration, according to a new poll released by the Associated Press, about 10 percentage points higher than his approval rating on the economy and foreign trade.
About half of Americans say Trump has “overstepped” on the issue of deportations, and most Americans oppose revoking visas for foreign students who participated in anti-Israel protests, according to the report.
In the poll, similar to a March poll, less than half of Americans approve of Trump’s immigration policy, while about 4 in 10 approve of his overall performance as president.
The higher approval rating on immigration is largely due to Republican support. About 80 percent of Republicans approve of Trump’s handling of immigration, compared with about 70 percent who approve of his economic and trade policies.
In contrast, other groups are less supportive of Trump’s immigration policies: only 4 in 10 independents and only 2 in 10 Democrats support him on this issue.
There is relatively little concern among Americans that they or those close to them will be directly affected by the sweeping immigration enforcement, according to the poll. Only about 20 percent said they were “very” or “somewhat” concerned about the issue. Democrats are more concerned about the issue than Republicans, and Latinos are more concerned about the issue than whites or blacks.
Half of people say Trump has gone too far in deporting undocumented immigrants to the United States. About a third say his approach is “about right,” and about 20 percent say he has not yet been “tough enough.”
Discontent is greater on the trade front: about 6 in 10 say Trump has gone “too far” in imposing new tariffs on other countries.
