A plan in America to cancel Qatar’s status as a non-NATO ally.
A group of Republican representatives in the US Senate has presented a plan that calls for Qatar’s withdrawal from the so-called “non-NATO major alliance” countries.
In this plan, while pointing out that Qatar hosts Hamas officials, the American lawmakers have asked their country’s foreign minister, Anthony Blinken, to review the bilateral relations between Washington and Doha within 90 days, including Qatar’s benefit from the status of a non-NATO ally, if this plan becomes law. put a review
The status of “non-NATO ally” is granted by the US government to countries that have cooperation and strategic relations with the US armed forces, but are not members of the NATO alliance. The countries included in this list enjoy a set of military and financial advantages. Currently, 19 countries are on the list of non-NATO allies of the United States.
In March 2022, the current US President Joe Biden’s government included Qatar in the list of non-NATO allies.
The introduction of this plan does not mean that it becomes a law. The legalization of such plans in the US requires that the other legislative branch of the US Congress (the House of Representatives) approves a similar plan and then it is signed by the US President.
