A significant change in the position of American Republicans on sending weapons to Ukraine

Pak Sahafat – Despite the Republicans’ serious opposition to the continued financial and arms support of the Democratic Joe Biden government to Ukraine, recently a group of Republican senators, in a letter to the President, demanded the “immediate” sending of missiles needed by Ukraine to confront Russia.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency, citing the Hill news website, Senator Tom Cotton (Tom Cotton) published this letter on the X social network (former Twitter) and claimed that not sending weapons “only prolongs the war and costs human lives.”

In this letter, Senator Roger Wicker, Susan Collins and Lindsey Graham have also expressed their agreement with this request.

The Republican senators’ letter to Biden states: We ask you to immediately send MGM-140 ATACMS tactical missile systems to Ukraine. Further delay will only undermine US national security interests and escalate the conflict.

According to lawmakers, providing Ukraine with ATACMS missile system could help the country’s military’s long-range firing capability.

The senators stressed that Ukraine’s recent attack on the seaport of Sevastopol, using British long-range weapons, proved “the effectiveness of such weapons” and would also increase future “counter-attacks” and since it was reportedly 30 days out of the normal fighting season [the summer season].

The letter states: The United States is fully capable of providing these weapons to Ukraine without any appreciable risk to its combat capability.

This request comes at a time when the Republicans have been against the continuation of support for Ukraine and have been strongly criticizing Biden for providing more aid to this country.

Based on this report, the Senate Armed Services Committee unanimously approved the amendment to the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act and asked the Ministry of Defense to review sending long-range missiles to Ukraine.

The Washington Post reported earlier this month that since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, the United States has spent nearly $66.2 billion to support Ukraine in the military, economic and humanitarian sectors. It is said that this figure includes less than 4% of the total US defense budget in 2023, which is one trillion and 77 billion dollars.
