The US presidential election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, and the winner of this election will begin the four-year presidential term from January 2025.

A presidential candidate in the United States becomes president not by winning a majority of the popular vote, but through a system called the Electoral College, which allocates electoral votes to the 50 states and the District of Columbia, based largely on their population, and goes to the White House.

When American voters go to the polls to elect a president, they usually only see the names of the presidential and vice presidential candidates. However, electors actually vote for an assembly of electors (electoral assembly).

Nationally, there are a total of 538 electoral votes (Electoral College votes), meaning a candidate must win 270 Electoral College votes. In the current US presidential election, important electoral states include Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The Electoral College will meet on December 17 to officially cast their ballots and send the results to Congress. The candidate who gets 270 electoral votes or more becomes the president.

These votes will be officially tallied by Congress on January 6, and the new US president will be sworn in on January 20.
