Aden Airport Flights Suspended; What’s Going On in Southern Yemen?

Aden Airport

PNN – News sources revealed the suspension of flights at Aden Airport in southern Yemen, leaving passengers stranded.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, citing Russia Al-Youm, an informed source reported that flights at Aden Airport have been halted.

The source explained that the refusal of the Saudi-led international coalition command to grant landing and takeoff permits at Aden International Airport led Yemenia Airlines to cancel several flights to and from the airport, causing confusion among hundreds of passengers.

Many travelers reportedly left Aden Airport for their homes after hours of waiting. So far, responsible authorities have not issued any official statement explaining the reason for the flight suspension.

This decision coincided with large-scale protests in the Aden and Hadhramaut governorates, organized by the Southern Transitional Council of Yemen. Demonstrators demanded the secession of southern Yemen and the establishment of a South Yemen state.

In recent days, forces affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council have taken control of large areas in Hadhramaut, which alone constitutes one-third of Yemen’s territory. These forces have also taken control of areas in the Al Mahrah governorate.

The situation in southern and eastern Yemen has rapidly deteriorated over the past week due to the swift advance of UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council elements in Hadhramaut and Al Mahrah.

Some sources reported that Rashad Al-Alimi, head of the Presidential Council based in Aden (aligned with Riyadh), left the city on Saturday, leaving Aden effectively under the control of UAE-affiliated forces.

Local sources in Aden reported the immediate withdrawal of Saudi forces and the complete suspension of flights at the city’s airport.

According to Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni website, Saudi Arabia evacuated dozens of its military personnel this morning from Aden via a military transport plane; these troops had been stationed at bases and some military camps in the city.

At the same time, a source in the Riyadh-aligned government announced that Saudi Arabia had suspended the issuance of any permits for civilian flights to and from Aden Airport, effectively closing Yemen’s airspace. A government source in Aden described this move as a warning from Riyadh in response to actions by the Southern Transitional Council in the eastern governorates.

Yemeni media also reported that the country’s airspace, controlled by Saudi-led coalition forces, has been completely and suddenly closed.

The website Al-Mawqia Post wrote that the Saudi coalition is responsible for issuing flight permits in Yemeni airspace, and all flights have been abruptly canceled since early this morning.
