Al Jazeera wrote: Instead of holding a formal, diplomatic meeting, Trump publicly rebuked Zelensky, a behavior that usually occurs in private meetings.
The Qatari media outlet wrote: Trump’s treatment of Zelensky shocked the media and analysts, but this type of behavior is not uncommon in American politics, and past presidents have also pressured leaders of other countries in various ways, albeit privately.
Al Jazeera recalled similar behavior by former presidents such as Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and John F. Kennedy toward officials in other countries, writing: Trump is no exception to this rule, but has simply exposed this behavior to the public eye.
The Ukrainian president’s meeting with the US president at the White House descended into a verbal altercation, with Zelensky leaving the White House early due to sharp disagreements over how to achieve peace with Russia. Trump accused Zelensky of “disrespecting the United States” and said he was not ready for peace.
During the meeting, Trump and Vance treated Zelensky with contempt, accusing him of ingratitude and warmongering.
