Al-Maliki nominated as Iraq PM.
Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had previously stated during the election campaign that if he was asked to assume the post of prime minister, he would not shy away from this responsibility.
The Islamic Dawa Party of Iraq issued a statement announcing that its Secretary General, Nouri al-Maliki, would be its candidate for the post of prime minister of Iraq.
The statement noted that Nouri al-Maliki has the experience and ability to govern the country and that the current critical stage requires a mature government with political balance.
The Secretary General of the Islamic Dawa Party and leader of the Government of Law parliamentary coalition was the Prime Minister of Iraq from 2006 to 2010 and 2010 to 2014. In the 2014 elections, despite winning the majority of votes due to political differences and the opinion of the highest religious authority, he preferred to step down from the post of prime minister for the third time and introduced his political ally, Haider al-Abadi, as the Prime Minister instead.
Hashim al-Rikabi, head of the media office of Nouri al-Maliki, said in a tweet about today’s visit to Erbil by the leader of the Government of Law coalition, that the visit was made at the official invitation of Massoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iraq, and during which several issues related to the issue of the three heads of state (prime minister, president, and speaker of parliament), in addition to other issues, will be discussed.
In this meeting in Erbil, al-Maliki is scheduled to meet with Massoud Barzani, leader of the Democratic Party, Nechirvan Barzani, president, and Masrour Barzani, prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq, and discuss domestic political issues with them.
