Algeria: Israel uses hunger as a weapon of war in Gaza

PNN – The ambassador and permanent representative of Algeria to the United Nations said about the deterioration of the situation in Gaza: Israel is deliberately using starvation as a weapon of war and the people of Gaza are already dying of starvation.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Ammar bin Jame said on Tuesday local time at the Security Council meeting about the Middle East and Palestine and added: The people of Gaza are already starving” and only a “small passage” remains to prevent famine, especially in northern Gaza, and the data shows that Resolution 2720 “has had no effect.”

Algeria’s representative strongly criticized Israel for violating international human rights law for deliberately using starvation as a weapon of war.

He also announced that more than 1,200 trucks are stuck in the Rafah crossing and more international pressure is needed to release aid.

Earlier, the UN chief coordinator for humanitarian affairs and reconstruction in Gaza said that 1.9 million people have been displaced after the Israeli attack on Rafah, saying: We need an immediate and complete ceasefire in Gaza.

Ms. Sigrid Kag, UN Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Gaza Reconstruction, added: We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and unhindered and continued access to massive aid delivery across Gaza.

This senior UN official stated: Everyone must respect the law and international human rights laws. Protecting civilians remains a top priority.

On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian resistance groups launched the “Al-Aqsa Storm” operation from Gaza against the positions of the Israeli regime. After November 24, 2023, a four-day temporary ceasefire was established between Israel and Hamas, or the pause for the exchange of prisoners between Hamas and Israel. This pause or temporary ceasefire lasted seven days and finally ended on December 10, 2023, and the Israeli regime resumed attacks on Gaza.

On May 26, the Israeli army also killed at least 41 Palestinians, including women and children, and injured dozens of others by attacking the refugee camp in Rafah city in the south of the Gaza Strip under the pretext of destroying Hamas. This has caused international concern because it worsens the situation in the Gaza Strip.

US President Joe Biden announced on May 31, 2024 and on the eve of the November 5 election this year that Israel presented a new proposal for establishing a ceasefire and exchange of prisoners, which was presented to Hamas through Qatar, and asked the parties not to miss this opportunity and reach an agreement on this proposal.

Following Biden’s plan, the resolution proposed by the United States to establish a cease-fire in Gaza and release prisoners was approved with 14 positive votes and one abstention (Russia) and without any dissenting votes at the meeting of the UN Security Council on June 10, 2024.

The approval of this resolution came while during the last eight months, the United States, with its strong support for Israel, prevented the approval of any resolution establishing a ceasefire in Gaza and condemning Hamas due to the military operation of Al-Aqsa Storm on October 7, 2023, and working with Israel to defeat this movement.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the number of martyrs in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, at the same time as the Al-Aqsa storm operation began, has reached 37,925 people, and the number of injured has reached 87,141 people.
