American journalist calls the war on terror a fraud.

Clayton Morris posted a picture of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and the head of the interim Syrian government, Ahmed al-Sharaa, at the White House on his X account and wrote: “The war on terrorism has always been a scam. This picture is proof for you.”

US President Donald Trump met with Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday, the first visit by a former rebel to Washington since the country gained independence in 1946.

At the same time, the US Treasury Department announced that all sanctions imposed on the Syrian government under the 2019 Caesar Act would be suspended for 180 days, to pave the way for Syria to rebuild and prosper by lifting US sanctions and ensuring accountability for those responsible.

The Caesar Act is a broad US sanctions package imposed on Syria in December 2019 to put economic pressure on the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The sanctions targeted individuals and entities affiliated with the government, banks, oil and energy companies, as well as Syrian real estate and export businesses, and their implementation has led many countries and companies to refrain from doing business with Damascus.

Two decades ago, al-Sharaa was held in a US-run detention center in Iraq while he was fighting alongside al-Qaeda militants, and few would have imagined that he would one day become the first Syrian leader to visit Washington in 80 years.

Trump and al-Sharaa first met in Saudi Arabia in May. Trump described him at the time as “a young, charming, hard-working man with a troubled past.” It was the first official contact between high-ranking officials from the two countries since 2000, when Bill Clinton met with Hafez al-Assad, Bashar al-Assad’s father.
