America’s support for the amended version of the Security Council resolution on Gaza.
The United States, which blocked the completion of several Security Council resolutions on Gaza, supports the revised version of a new resolution.
The vote on the Security Council resolution was postponed for the fourth day in a row on Friday, but the US representative to the United Nations said hours later that the US and Arab countries had reached a revised version that Washington supports.
“We are ready to vote for it,” Linda Thomas Greenfield, the US representative to the United Nations, told reporters. “This resolution supports Egypt’s priority to establish a mechanism to support humanitarian assistance, and we are ready to move forward.”
It is not yet clear whether other members of the Security Council, especially Russia, agree with the changes made in the text. On Friday, it was decided that the representatives of the member states of the Security Council would consult with their capitals about the resolution.
In a version of this draft that was seen by the Guardian newspaper, the part that called for an “immediate suspension of hostilities” to send humanitarian aid was deleted and replaced by the words “immediate steps to enable safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid”.
