An early start for Democrats to confront Trump

PNN – With the victory of “Donald Trump” in the November 5 presidential election, the Democratic Party in America is seeking to draw a new legal and judicial plan to deal with the elected president.

According to Pakistan News Network’s report from the New York Times, the Democrats, who will leave power next year, are planning to oppose Trump.

According to this popular American newspaper, the conditions in Washington are now different from previous periods, and other Republicans who stopped some of Trump’s extremes in the first term have now either died or retired and joined the ranks of the Democrats.

For this reason, prominent democratic figures who do not see the current political landscape very clearly, are looking to create a second wave of opposition to Trump from the areas under their control.

According to the author of this article, the Democrats actually think that they can stop some of Trump’s policies, including immigration laws, fighting the right to abortion, etc.

This planning started in 2023 in some states supporting the Democratic Party and assuming the victory of Trump, and it was largely kept silent with the aim of dealing with doubts in the society about the ability of the members of this party.

Keith Ellison, the attorney general of the state of “Minnesota” from the Democratic Party, says that he has been preparing for Trump’s possible victory for a long time. In this regard, he added: “In our system, the states have a lot of power, and we’ve been given that power to use it to protect the people, and we’re going to do that.”

The New York Times notes that the Democrats’ planning to counter some of Trump’s policies relies on the work of hundreds of lawyers. Already, the groups present have begun holding workshops and employing lawyers and prosecutors to challenge the regulations, laws, and actions envisioned by the new administration in Washington.

Reports indicate that after Trump’s victory in 2016, a legal group named “Democracy Forward” was formed. The group has built a multi-million dollar war fund and, with more than 800 lawyers, has prepared itself for a legal response to a wide range of issues.

Meanwhile, researchers from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the American Bridge Research Center, a Democratic-affiliated group, are also collecting files on Trump’s choices for the Cabinet and the White House.

Democratic efforts to influence

Because Democrats at the federal level will have little ability to pass legislation or stop Trump’s programs, the paper notes, their main focus is on 23 Democratic governors, many of whom are looking to become anti-Trump figures.

Although reports indicate that in the meantime, differences of opinion have also emerged about how to confront Trump at the state level; Among them are Gov. Gavin Newsom of California and JB Pritzker of Illinois, who are calling for a tough stance on the president-elect, and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, who says he’s looking for ways to work with the new administration.

Trying to emulate the Republicans

In some ways, the Democrats’ new strategy is similar to what Republicans have done under Joe Biden.

Over the past four years, Republican governors and state legislatures have pursued their own agendas and defied the administration’s wishes by taking steps to limit abortion rights, limit transgender rights, and pursue other conservative priorities. Including Ron DeSantis from Florida and Greg Abbott from Texas, who caused a lot of trouble for the Biden administration by driving immigrants from their states to Democratic areas.

Therefore, some Democrats hope to be able to similarly use their government power for national influence. Democratic strategists Arkady Gurney and Sarah Knight argued in a similar note last year that party donors should invest more in turning Democratic-held states into new centers of liberal influence.

Since then, they’ve worked to better coordinate policies across liberal states, urging ambitious Democrats to focus on local efforts.
