An unknown person attacked the leader of the South Korean opposition with a knife.
An unknown man attacked the leader of the Democratic Party, the main opposition party in South Korea, with a knife in the city of Busan on Wednesday.
Violence against politicians in East Asia continues, this time targeting the leader of the South Korean opposition, “Lee Jae-Myung”. The leader of the South Korean Democratic Party was stabbed in the neck while walking among the people in the city of Busan.
According to the South Korean state news agency “Yonhap”, although Lee Jae-Myung has lost a lot of blood, he is not facing a life-threatening situation. He was initially transferred to a hospital in Busan for initial treatment and later transferred to the capital’s hospital by helicopter.
The attack on Lee Jae-Myung took place under circumstances where violence against politicians in East Asia has previously resulted in casualties. On July 8, 2022, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the target of a bullet and was killed.
The South Korean Democratic Party called this attack a terrorist act and stated that there are concerns about the severe bleeding of the party leader. South Korean authorities have not yet commented on the attacker’s identity and motives. Still, witnesses say a 60 or 70-year-old man was behind the attack and was arrested by security forces. In the images, it is clear that an unknown man approaches the opposition party leader under the pretext of taking a souvenir photo.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol condemned the attack and ordered the relevant authorities to clarify the facts of this incident as soon as possible. According to reports, Lee Jae-myung, 59, is one of the candidates for the 2027 presidential election.
