As tensions flare despite trade truce, China says US is ‘provoking frictions’
A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Monday in response to reporters’ questions about US officials’ statements that China violated agreements: After the release of the “Joint Statement of the China-US Economic Dialogue in Geneva” on May 12, China has canceled or suspended some reciprocal tariff and non-tariff measures against the US by the agreements.
He added: “China has implemented the agreements with a responsible approach, has been serious about implementing the agreements, and has always defended its legitimate interests. In contrast, the US has taken new discriminatory restrictions against China after the Geneva talks, including issuing guidelines to control the export of artificial intelligence chips and banning the sale of chip design software (EDA) to China.
The spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce described these US measures as a clear violation of the agreements reached by the two presidents in the phone call on January 17 and destroying the trust achieved in the Geneva talks. He added that instead of reflecting on its behavior, the US is making groundless accusations against China, which is completely contrary to the facts. China firmly rejects these accusations.
