Axios: Trump and senior team spent hours discussing Iran at Camp David.
The Axios news website, citing two American officials and another informed source, claimed that US President Donald Trump gathered his entire senior foreign policy team at Camp David on Sunday and they discussed Washington’s strategy regarding Tehran’s nuclear program as well as the war in Gaza for hours.
A senior American official told Axios that Trump believes that both issues (Iran’s nuclear program and the war in Gaza) are intertwined and part of a regional reality that he intends to shape!
According to American officials, this informal meeting at Camp David contained several political agendas. In addition to Trump, the meeting related to Iran and Gaza was attended by his vice president J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegsett, White House Chief of Staff Suzie Wiles, Steve Whittaker, Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and other American officials.
Trump said yesterday, without giving details of the meetings, that “generals and admirals” of the US military were also present. A US official told Axios that the gathering of senior officials of Trump’s foreign policy team at Camp David allowed them to meet for a long time and discuss these issues.
Axios also claimed that according to the White House, Trump’s initial deadline for a deal with Tehran will expire on Thursday of this week, although the sides are currently demanding that negotiations continue.
In his latest comments on Iran and the Washington-Tehran talks, Donald Trump claimed: “We are doing a lot of work on Iran, but their negotiating team is very tough and difficult.”
He also mentioned his recent call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying: “We raised a lot of issues in the conversation I had with Netanyahu and the call went very well.”
The US president added that he had spoken with Netanyahu about Iran and other issues. Trump also repeated his usual threats to use alternative means if an agreement with Iran is not reached, claiming: “We are trying to reach an agreement with Iran to prevent death and destruction.”
