California’s secession from the United States officially begins.
The website Russia Today wrote that the English newspaper Independent reported that residents of the US state of California can now vote in favor of secession from the United States in 2028, as the organizers of the petition have received official permission to collect signatures in this regard.
The state’s Secretary of State, Shirley Weber, announced on Thursday that the main sponsor of the petition, Marcos Ruiz Evans, must collect more than 546,651 signatures, about 5 percent of the total votes cast in the November 2022 general election, to hold a referendum on this issue in November 2028.
Evans announced that he has until July 22, 2025, to deliver the signatures to the state’s election officials. According to Evans’ website, California’s departure from US law will allow its residents to determine the fate of the region, not unelected officials in Washington.
He continued: “This means that we will have a government that begins and ends at the borders of California, and in this way, the wealth that is collected as taxes from the people of this state will be spent only on them, and this state can determine its destiny for the first time.”
Marcus Oves Evans is one of the staunchest opponents of the new US President Donald Trump and has been seeking the separation of the state of California since 2012.
California is the most populous state in the United States and, according to the International Monetary Fund, is the fifth largest economy in the world.
