The Canadian government has expelled two-thirds of its diplomats stationed in India after New Delhi threatened to revoke their diplomatic immunity.

This event will add to the tensions in the relations between the two countries, which have turned into darkness since last month. Last month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that agents of the Indian government were involved in the murder of a separatist who was a Canadian citizen.

India has rejected Canada’s claim as absurd and biased and said that Canada has not provided any specific information to support its claim.

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly told reporters on Thursday that India has not provided “any good reason” to revoke the immunity of diplomats and that the country’s action is a violation of international law.

Jolly said 41 Canadian diplomats left India with their families on Wednesday, while another 21 will remain in the country. He also said that Ottawa will temporarily close its three consulates in India.

The dispute between India and Canada flared up after Justin Trudeau recently blamed India for the June shooting of Hardeep Singh Najjar, a Sikh separatist in British Columbia’s Punjab state, by two masked men.

New Delhi gave Ottawa an ultimatum to withdraw its diplomats from India by October 10 and threatened to not guarantee the immunity of Canadian diplomats on Indian soil after this date.
