PNN – Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, emphasized that economic and trade relations between the two countries are beneficial to both sides, but warned of the consequences of tariffs war.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, Liu Pengyu said in response to the US Supreme Court ruling that declared tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump illegal: Tariff and trade wars are not in the interest of either side. The economic and trade relationship between China and the United States is beneficial to both sides.

The diplomat added: Both sides should work together to implement the important joint understandings between the leaders of the two countries and provide a higher degree of certainty and stability for economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States, as well as for the global economy.

According to the TASS news agency website, on February 20 (Friday), the US Supreme Court ruled that the imposition of import tariffs on other countries by the US President under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was an abuse of power. However, the country’s highest judicial authority did not specify whether the United States should refund previous payments for tariffs.

On April 2, 2025, the US President announced tariffs on products from 185 countries and regions. He went on to adjust the tariff rates on goods imported from several countries. On August 29, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals ruled that the president lacked the authority to impose many of the announced tariffs, and on September 4, the US government asked the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling.
