PNN – Ray McGovern, a former CIA analyst, argued that the US leadership may turn to the nuclear option to prevent the failure of Ukraine.
According to Pakistan News Network’s report from “Sputnik”, McGovern added during his recent interview on the “Judging Freedom” program that the 2024 US presidential election will force the Biden administration to find a way to show that Ukraine will not lose the war.
He analyzed: There is an ignorant person in the Pentagon or in the White House who would say in consultation with the President of the United States: Look, Mr. President, the only way we can show Russia we’re serious is to use one of the mini nukes. They’re only one-tenth the size of the one we used on Hiroshima. So let’s do it and stop them. They will be and we will absolutely not lose in the elections.
According to him, the scenario of exploring the nuclear option is “likely to happen” and is “the only solution” that officials in Washington, D.C. may consider to avoid defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
Since the beginning of the war between Ukraine and Russia, two years have passed, America has provided billions of dollars in financial and military aid to Kiev. But recently, the Republican representatives of the American Congress have opposed the continuation of these aids to Ukraine.
On February 21, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin, criticizing the West’s indifference to Moscow’s security concerns, recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics in the Donbas region.
Three days later, Putin launched a military operation he called “special operations” against Ukraine, turning the tense Moscow-Kiev relationship into a military confrontation, and the war is still ongoing.
Ukraine’s summer counterattack at the end of 2023 did not bring much results, and now despite Ukraine’s fatigue and the unwillingness of Western countries to support Kiev, a long war should be expected. The European Union countries have pledged to provide Ukraine with about one million artillery shells by the end of next year, and despite the fact that the war has turned into a war of attrition, it seems unlikely that this promise will be fulfilled.
