The Brazilian president added that the threatened US tariffs were “unacceptable blackmail” and announced his readiness to respond in kind.

Lula da Silva’s stance on the US’s announcement of a 50% tariff against Brazil was taken in recent days.

Trump blamed the tariffs, which are set to take effect in August, on Brazil’s treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro (known as Brazil’s Trump) as well as trade practices against American companies that he said were unfair.

The announcement of the tariffs came days after Lula called Trump an “empire” that the world doesn’t want.
