Decline in Trump’s Popularity

Baby Boomers, or “boomers,” are the generation born in the United States between 1946 and 1964, during the post-World War II population explosion.

According to a recent YouGov/The Economist poll reported by Newsweek, support for Trump among older American voters has declined significantly since October. In a poll conducted last month, 49 percent of voters expressed approval of Trump’s performance, while an equal percentage (49 percent) disapproved. However, a YouGov/The Economist poll in November revealed that only 42 percent of Boomer voters approved of Trump’s performance, with a higher percentage, 57 percent, disapproving. This indicates a 15-point drop in Trump’s approval ratings among this demographic.

Why Boomers’ Support for Trump Matters

The Baby Boomer generation played a crucial role in electing Trump as president in the 2024 presidential election, with 51 percent of this age group voting for him. The sharp decline in his popularity among Boomers could negatively impact support for the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. This decline will be particularly significant in states where older voters have historically been a key pillar of Republican support.

Many senior citizens are worried about potential delays in SNAP and other essential benefits following the unprecedented government shutdown. Although the shutdown has ended, concerns about the stability of food assistance and broader pressures related to the cost of living persist.
