PNN – Thousands of people in Berlin, the capital of Germany, protested against the high cost of housing rent in this city.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, citing DPA, thousands of German people protested the increase in rent and housing costs in Berlin on Saturday.
While the German police estimated the number of protesters at 4,000, the organizers say that 12,000 people participated. The people of Berlin protested the sudden increase in housing costs and demanded a change in the government’s policies in the field of housing.
Demonstrators called for a nationwide cap on rents, an end to forced evictions and a ban on terminating contracts when landlords seek to use the property for their own purposes.

They also called for a 2021 referendum, in which 59 percent of voters wanted public ownership of real estate companies with more than 1,000 apartments in Berlin.
Field reports in most German cities indicate an unprecedented increase in housing prices and rents in this country, and it is said that these price increases have been unprecedented in the past decade.
According to the statistics published on German government websites, the rent price in Munich until the end of 2020 was about 18 dollars per square meter, but this year the average has reached 22 dollars per square meter. The same is true for the city of Berlin, where apartments cost around $15 per square meter, compared to $11 three years ago.
Most German citizens, especially immigrants who have low-wage jobs, complain about the increase in housing prices in the cities of this country and believe that although salaries are stable, the prices of housing and livelihood goods are increasing.
