Trump’s controversial plan to occupy the Gaza Strip; answers to 5 key questions.
According to Al Jazeera, US President Donald Trump, who had previously announced an attempt to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip permanently, has put forward a new proposal regarding the US occupation of the Gaza Strip.
The proposal, which most Arab and Palestinian leaders have rejected, emphasizes the need to transfer Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan. Human rights advocates also consider the proposal an attempt to ethnically cleanse Gaza. Not many details of the proposal have been provided, but even the general outline of the plan is enough to create controversy. Al Jazeera has tried to answer a few questions about the plan.
1- Details of Trump’s plan to occupy Gaza
In his joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US President Donald Trump said that the United States will take control of the Gaza Strip and conduct its operations there. It will be responsible for collecting all unexploded bombs and other weapons, clearing various areas, removing rubble from destroyed buildings, and creating economic growth and development in the area, which can create many jobs and housing for the residents of the area.
2- Hosts of Gaza residents from Trump’s perspective
Trump has said that he will ask the neighboring countries of Palestine to accept Gaza refugees. Of course, he did not talk about whether the Palestinians are ready to accept such a plan or not.
Since January 25, Trump has repeatedly asked Egypt and Jordan to take this action, but these countries and other Arab countries have rejected Trump’s proposal.
The US President added in his speech: Instead of these countries, we should go to other countries that care about the issue. Many countries want to do this, and eventually, different areas will be prepared for the 1.8 million residents of Gaza. The rich neighboring countries will have to bear the costs of this event.
3- Will Trump carry out military operations to implement his plan?
In response to the question of whether the United States will send its military forces to Gaza based on this plan, Trump stated: We will do whatever is necessary. If a military presence is necessary, we will accept this presence and take control of the region develop it create thousands of jobs in IT, and do something that the entire Middle East will be proud of!
4- Does Trump support the two-state solution?
For the past several decades, the United States has supported the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, which could lead to the formation of a Palestinian state in limited parts of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. When Donald Trump was asked about this plan, he did not give a clear answer to this question and added: This does not mean two states or one state or any other state, but it means that we want to give the people a chance to live, because Gaza has become a hell for its inhabitants.
5- According to Trump’s plan, who will be the inhabitants of Gaza?
In response to this question, Trump said: In my opinion, “the nations of the world” will live in this area, yes, the nations of the world!”
Without mentioning the details of this statement, he said: Palestinians; Palestinians can also live there. Many people will live there.
The first phase of the ceasefire agreement between the Palestinian resistance groups and the Zionist regime was implemented on January 19, and based on it, four rounds of prisoner exchange operations between Hamas and Israel have been implemented.
According to the existing agreement, indirect negotiations on the second phase were supposed to begin on the sixteenth day of the agreement’s implementation and to conclude before the end of the fifth week of the first phase; however, the second phase negotiations have not yet begun.
