Did Iran approve the two-state solution for Palestine in the General Assembly?

PNN – While some are seeking to cast doubt on the position of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards Palestine and the formation of an independent Palestinian government following the positive vote on the recent resolution of the General Assembly, Iran’s delegation to the United Nations announced every Iranian vote other than positive was playing on the ground of the Zionist regime and its supporters.

According to the Pakistan News Network, (October 27, 2023), the United Nations General Assembly approved the resolution proposed by the Arab countries regarding the current situation in Palestine in an extraordinary meeting on Palestine. In this resolution, with 121 votes in favor, 13 votes against and 45 abstentions, the immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities in Gaza was emphasized. America voted against this resolution and Iran also voted in favor.

The positive vote of the Islamic Republic of Iran on this resolution was met with reactions. As the representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the United Nations in New York issued a statement in this regard and announced that “This resolution was submitted by the Arab League to the United Nations General Assembly and its text was not even discussed in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Certainly, the Islamic Republic of Iran has a problem with parts of this resolution and it is in conflict with the principled and definite policies of our country towards Palestine; But on the other hand, the Zionist regime and its supporters tried to firstly consider the resistance operation as a terrorist act, which was thwarted by the strong efforts and cohesion of the Islamic countries and the support of a number of other countries, and secondly, they tried to create divisions among countries.

Also, it is worth mentioning that due to the existence of some conflicts, the Islamic Republic of Iran did not agree to be a co-sponsor of the desired resolution. Therefore, any Iranian vote other than positive for this resolution was playing on the ground of the Zionist regime and its supporters.

In this regard, some claimed that the Islamic Republic of Iran voted positively for the two-state solution in this resolution; an issue that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always opposed and has always emphasized on the formation of a Palestinian state with Quds Sharif as its capital.

In this connection, the Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations announced in an interview with IRNA that “The positive vote and support of the Islamic Republic of Iran for the approval of the resolution proposed by Jordan to the United Nations General Assembly regarding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is in full accordance with the pattern of votes and positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the previous resolutions of the Assembly, and there has been no change in Iran’s positions.

Before this, the Islamic Republic of Iran had repeatedly declared that the only solution to the Palestinian problem is the end of the occupation and the recognition of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in that land with Quds Sharif as its capital. In the letter that Hossein Amirabdollahian wrote to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the beginning of the recent developments in Palestine, this solution was emphasized from Iran’s point of view. This issue was emphasized many times in the Supreme Leader’s statements.

As Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Revolution, said in this regard at the funeral ceremony of Imam Khomeini (RA): The solution to the Palestinian issue is not imposed and false solutions. The only solution to the Palestinian issue is for the real people of Palestine – not the usurping and occupying immigrants – both those who stayed inside Palestine and those outside Palestine, to determine the ruling system of their country. If relying on the votes of a nation is the truth according to the claimants of democracy in the world, the Palestinian nation is also a nation and must make a decision. The usurping regime that is working in the land of Palestine today has no right to this land; It is a fake regime, false and created by oppressive powers. Therefore, the Palestinian people should not be asked to recognize this regime.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hossein Amir abdollahian, said in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday: We believe that a complete and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue is only possible through the full realization of the inalienable right of this nation to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in all of that land with the capital of Quds Sharif. The entire land of Palestine, from the sea to the river, belongs only to the genuine Palestinians, including Christians, Jews and Muslims, and no institution or country has the right or can give any part of it to another person or group. This is a false illusion, a crude fantasy and a dream that may only come true in a dream. The Islamic Republic of Iran, while believing in the right of the Palestinian people to resist the occupation, has presented a political and democratic plan to hold a self-determination referendum among the original residents of Palestine (both Jewish, Muslim and Christian), which has also been registered in the United Nations.
