Doubts about the continuation of US military support to Ukraine after the 2024 elections

PNN – After the US House of Representatives approved a $60 billion military aid package to Ukraine and Washington prepared to send weapons to Kiev, analysts warned of the continuation of this, especially after the 2024 US presidential election.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network from Reuters, Joe Biden’s administration plans to resume the transfer of weapons and equipment to Ukraine after approving the $60 billion military aid package to Kiev.

According to this news agency, the support package approved by the United States will arrive in Kiev much later than expected amid the severe shortage of ammunition in Ukraine. At the same time, analysts have warned that there is no guarantee that more aid will be sent.

However, some officials and experts say that the deployment of artillery shells, guided missiles and air defenses will change Ukraine’s military landscape.

CIA director William Burns recently said, “By strengthening Ukraine, both practically and morally, they can do well by the end of 2024 to thwart Putin’s arrogant comments that time is on his side.”

A well-informed American official also said in the same context: Ammunition, air defense systems, interceptors and long-range weapons can make the change within a few days.

He then added: There will be no delay or bottleneck from the American side.

The statements of these two American officials were raised while more than two years of the war in Ukraine have passed, this country has lost parts of its territory in the eastern regions and Russia has increased bombing even in the cities behind the front line.

After months of delay, the US House of Representatives on Saturday approved a $95 billion package for security assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, of which $60 billion is allocated to Ukraine. It is said that the US Senate will also approve this package this week, and the path of US President Joe Biden to sign this law will return.

Kateryna Stepanenko, a Russia analyst at the Institute of War Studies, said aid was being sent too late, with Ukraine’s severe ammunition shortages leading to the loss of its October 2023 initiative.

He added: Since October, Ukraine has lost 583 square kilometers of its land, and the main reason for this was the lack of artillery ammunition. He then noted: Russia has the necessary time to prepare the attack in late spring or early summer.

Political uncertainty

Reuters further noted that although the US military aid package to Ukraine has been approved after months of waiting and the White House is preparing to send weapons to Kiev, 2024 is full of uncertainties, especially after the 2024 presidential election. In fact, if Donald Trump, the leading candidate of the Republican Party, wins this election, as he has stated many times, he has expressed doubts about the continuation of large aid to Ukraine.

Robert Moret, a professor at Syracuse University in New York, said in the same context: “Ukraine should use this year to rebuild its forces in order to prepare for a long war.” He added: “The goal of Europe should be to fill the gap in the support of the United States.”
