Egg prices rise in the US; $40,000 worth of eggs stolen in Pennsylvania.
According to CBS News, amid rising egg prices across the United States, a truckload of about 100,000 eggs was stolen from an egg production company in Pennsylvania.
American media outlets reported that Pennsylvania police have launched an investigation into the incident. Pete & Gerry’s Organics poultry farm confirmed the theft in a statement to CBS and announced its cooperation with local police.
The poultry farm is a subsidiary of the famous Nellie’s Free Range poultry company. According to CBS’s analysis of consumer price index data, egg prices have increased in the United States in recent years, and have seen a 160% increase from 2019 to 2024.
According to CBS, citing the US Department of Agriculture, egg shortages have also been reported in recent months, mainly due to the outbreak of bird flu, which killed millions of laying hens in December alone.
Thieves in the US state of Pennsylvania have stolen more than 100,000 eggs – worth $40,000 (£32,000) – from a single grocer.
The heist targeted the back of a lorry at Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle on 1 February, police say.
It comes as the price of eggs has risen amid a bird flu epidemic, making them an unexpectedly costly menu option. The national chain Waffle House has just hiked their egg charge.
Prices for eggs have surged more than 65% in the last year, US government data shows. The agriculture department predicted the cost will increase by about 20% in 2025.
