European-style freedom of expression / University of Munich canceled the UN special rapporteur’s speech

PNN – In an apparent attempt to silence critics of the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip, the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) has canceled a lecture by UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, Albanese, an Italian lawyer and United Nations special rapporteur on human rights issues in the occupied Palestinian territories, who has spoken about the Zionist regime’s genocide against the Palestinian people, was scheduled to give a speech on the subject of “colonialism, human rights and international law” at the University of Munich on February 16.

“Socialist World” website reported: In an emailed message to the organizers of the lecture, the university said the cancellation of the lecture was due to political bias and security concerns that could arise due to the expectation of “contradictory views”.

In March 2024, in her official role at the United Nations, Albanze said that “for logical reasons” she considers the military action of the Israeli regime in Gaza to be genocide.

Then, in the report of the United Nations last October, she went beyond her position and stated that the actions of the Zionist regime’s cabinet following the military invasion of Gaza meet all the necessary criteria in international law in the field of committing war crimes.

Reacting to the cancellation of her speech, Albanze wrote in Messenger X: When ideology begins to silence people, there is no freedom.

This is the latest case of censoring the voices of critics of the Zionist regime at the University of Munich. In September 2022, this university prevented the performance of English singer and composer Roger Waters, who is one of the most vocal critics of the Zionist regime’s actions against the Palestinian people.

The “Munich Eye” website also reported that Albanese was scheduled to give a speech at the Free University of Berlin on February 19, which was opposed by the German-(regime) Israel Association and the group known as the German-Jewish Initiative.

Some reports show that the mayor of Berlin, under the pressure of the Zionist lobby and the Israeli embassy, has asked the president of the Free University of Berlin to cancel Albanzeh’s lecture program.
