Financial Times: Spain wants to recognize the independent state of Palestine by July

PNN – The Financial Times newspaper quoted Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez as reporting that Madrid plans to recognize the independent state of Palestine by July.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network from the Financial Times, the Prime Minister of Spain stated during his trip to the Middle East: We must seriously think about doing it in the first half of this year.

According to this English newspaper, Pedro Sánchez, who is one of the fiercest critics of Israel’s attack on Gaza, revealed this goal today when he began his trip to Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

While announcing that “Spain wants to recognize Palestine”, referring to the United Nations, he added: “We must be careful about the decisions made in Brussels and New York.”

Sanchez had previously announced Spain’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state, but did not specify a timetable for it.

Several member states of the European Union, including Spain, Ireland and the Republic of Malta, support the recognition of the independent state of Palestine.

In March, Spain’s prime minister signed a joint statement with the prime ministers of Ireland, Slovenia and Malta in which he declared his willingness to recognize the state of Palestine. They added in the statement that they are ready to do so “when the conditions are right”.

According to the report, while the EU’s long-standing policy is to support a “two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the bloc does not have an official and unified position on the formation of an independent Palestinian state.

Last November, Sánchez pledged that his new government would make the recognition of a Palestinian state a top foreign policy priority.
