Financial Times: The International Criminal Court’s action against Netanyahu puts Biden in trouble

PNN – The Financial Times newspaper wrote: The decision of the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for senior officials of the Israeli regime, including the Prime Minister of this regime, Benjamin Netanyahu, puts US President Joe Biden in a diplomatic and political dilemma.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, this English newspaper added: The International Criminal Court announced that it intends to issue an arrest warrant against the officials of the Israeli regime just a few hours after the meetings of US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan with the Israeli authorities in Jerusalem. A decision that has angered American politicians and political differences.

Joe Biden and Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives, have condemned the statements of Karim Khan, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, regarding the issuance of arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Hamas leaders for committing war crimes.

The Financial Times, referring to Biden’s domestic and diplomatic challenge, wrote: The US President’s defense of Netanyahu and the (regime) of Israel threatens to escalate the differences over the Gaza war within the Democratic Party, especially as the party prepares for a difficult battle in the upcoming elections.

But any retaliatory measures against the International Criminal Court will undermine the US’s efforts to present itself as a mediator in the negotiations to end the Gaza conflict, and will further damage the country’s standing among many countries in the so-called global south.

At the beginning of this month, Biden tried to pretend that he had distanced himself from Netanyahu’s cabinet in the attack on Rafah city and claimed that Washington would suspend arms aid to the Israeli regime in the event of any attack.

But Netanyahu continued to attack east of Rafah, displacing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in an operation that the US claims is limited in scope.

The US State Department also confirmed in a report to Congress that Israel may have used US-made weapons in violation of international humanitarian law, but the ministry refused to formally accuse the regime.

One of the signs of opposition to Biden’s position regarding the recent conflicts has emerged in the reaction of American Senator Bernie Sanders and Ihan Omar, a female Democratic representative of the American Congress, who welcomed the decision of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli officials.

In this context, Sanders said: Netanyahu carried out unprecedented destructive war actions against the entire Palestinian people and has caused the martyrdom or injury of more than 5% of the Palestinian population.

He added: “The court prosecutor has the right to take such measures.” Arrest orders may or may not be enforced, but it is necessary for the international community to adhere to international law.

Financial Times wrote: At the same time, more moderate Democrats, such as Chuck Schumer, the majority leader of the US Senate, have described the court’s decision as unfair.

He claimed that Israel’s right (regime) to defend itself can never be equated with the terrorism and barbarism of Hamas.

In a short statement at the White House, Biden criticized the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue Netanyahu’s arrest warrant and called this decision cruel.
