Finland: It is not necessary to host American nuclear weapons.
In response to the deployment of US nuclear weapons in several NATO countries, Finland’s Prime Minister Petri Orpo said that Helsinki doesn’t need to host US nuclear weapons on its soil.
In an interview with a Polish newspaper (Rzeczpospolita), Orpo said that there is no need to deploy American nuclear weapons in Finland because NATO alone creates nuclear deterrence.
Recalling that American nuclear weapons have already been deployed in several European countries, he said that deploying weapons in these countries is enough to ensure NATO’s security.
The Prime Minister of Finland also added: However, Helsinki is ready to participate in deterrence against (possible threats against NATO) with conventional weapons.
As part of the so-called nuclear umbrella plan, America has deployed its nuclear arsenal in a number of NATO member countries. Polish authorities have previously expressed their desire to join the project. Finland became a member of NATO on April 4, 2023.
